Mathematics

Math instruction includes in grades Tk-8 is based around the Common-Core aligned Eureka Math curriculum. Eureka Math builds number sense, concepts of place value, and automaticity and incorporates arithmetic computation with problem solving. We supplement the program as appropriate to support struggling students and challenge advanced students.

Students in grades TK-5 have a total of 45-100 minutes of Math instruction daily depending on the grade level. Instruction is composed of a combination of procedures, and problem solving. This structure allows students to learn basic math facts, algorithms, and the rationales underlying them, and then apply those facts, algorithms, and rationales with accuracy and automaticity to solve problems in context. A portion of the math procedures class in grades Tk-1 is dedicated to a math procedures class in grades Tk-1 is dedicated to a math meeting that includes scaffolded questioning and routines that promote mental acuity and incorporate the following elements:

  • Calendar (month, day, year; today tomorrow, yesterday)

  • Weather

  • Time (digital and analog)

  • Monday (values of coins and applied calculations)

The daily math meeting support English language development by teaching explicit vocabulary, providing opportunities for students to speak and listen to one another , including choral responses, and reinforcing accurate syntax and language structure.

Students in grade 6 attend one 90 minute Math class daily and students in grades 7-8 attend one 70 minute math class daily. They may have additional instruction, practice, or challenge and extension of opportunities instruction in sixth grade is designed to ensure students have throughly mastered the operations and principles needed higher-level applications. Students in seventh grade study Pre-Algebra, and eighth grader master Algebra 1.
